THE PRACTICAL TEST

About the Practical Driving Test

The standard driving test last about 40 minutes. To pass your driving test, the driving examiner is looking to see if you can (a) drive safely; and (b) can demonstrate knowledge of the Highway Code through your driving.

The test first involves an eyesight check, for which you are required to to read a car number plate from a distance of 20 metres (new style plates) and 20.5 metres (old style plates).

For your driving, you will examined on your general driving ability and on two manoeuvres selected from reversing around a corner, turn in the road, reverse bay parking (this manoeuvre is only done if test centre has a car park) and reverse parallel parking. You may also be required to carry out an emergency stop exercise.

Throughout the test, the examiner will give you route directions in plenty of time. Test routes will include a variety of roads and traffic conditions, from town centre roads to dual carriageways. The examiner will ask you to perform the set manoeuvre exercises at suitable locations on the route.

In addition to above, you will also be asked two vehicle safety check questions, one "show me" and one "tell me". Some checks will involve opening the bonnet to identify where fluid levels would be checked. (See the Show me Tell me Link on left of page for full list of question and answers)

To assist you in preparing for your test I will conduct a mock test, identical to your actual test where I will act as an examiner. Having personally observed many driving tests I can show you exactly what to expect on your actual test and any weak areas can be identified and corrected.

THE DAY OF THE TEST

At the Test Centre

So, the big day had arrived, here is a few tips and what you should make sure you bring with you.

Don't forget to bring both parts of your Provisional Driving License, your letter from the DSA confirming your test time and your Theory Test Certificate.

Things to remember for your test.

Try and get a good night's sleep. Not easy I know.
Don't forget all your documents.
Glasses If you wear them
A bottle of water.
Some local test centre's DON'T have toilet facilities (check beforehand with your instructor)

We should arrive about 15 minutes before your appointment and wait in the waiting area for the examiner. He or she will arrive bang on time (normally), call your name and ask to see both parts of your provisional driving license. Sometimes they will also ask to see your Theory Test certificate but not always.Once they have checked your License they will ask you to read and sign drivers declaration then ask you to take them to your car.
